Audrey & Tracy’s Intentional Columbia River Gorge Elopement

newlyweds kissing while standing in a field of golden grass during their Columbia River Gorge elopement.

I’ve visited the Columbia River Gorge to document weddings and elopements several times, but every once in a while, a couple takes me somewhere completely new. That’s exactly what happened when Audrey and Tracy chose to elope in Columbia Hills State Historical Park.

Their day had a little bit of everything. Quiet, intentional moments with just the two of them, mixed with time spent with their families and their dogs. The whole celebration felt easy and fully them. Keep reading to learn more about their day, as well as what Columbia Hills State Historical Park has to offer.

How Audrey + Tracy Planned Their Columbia River Gorge Elopement

Audrey and Tracy wanted their day to feel simple and connected to where they were. They didn’t want something over the top, just space to be present and take in the landscape around them. And that’s exactly how the day unfolded.

Starting the Day at Their Columbia River Gorge Airbnb

Audrey and Tracy started their Columbia River Gorge elopement at their Airbnb in White Salmon, Washington, with a slow morning and getting ready separately. I spent some time documenting Audrey getting ready, and when Tracy arrived, I photographed him as well. He wore several meaningful details, like a Goofy watch that belonged to his late mom, which made the moment feel even more personal.

After, they stepped out into the forest near the Airbnb for their first look and private vows. It was quiet and tucked away, which made the experience feel deeply intentional. They also brought letters from family members and read them during this time, which was a thoughtful way to include them in the day.

A Heartfelt Ceremony at Columbia Hills State Historical Park

For their ceremony, they headed to Columbia Hills State Historical Park and invited a small group of family to come. In attendance were Audrey’s parents and grandpa, along with Tracy’s dad, aunt, and uncle. Instead of being escorted down the aisle, they each walked in separately with their dogs, Squirrel and Gambit. It was such a fun shift from tradition, and one of my favorite parts of their elopement. They decided what was important to them and then planned their experience around that, rather than what is typically done.

A close friend officiated, and they each read a poem during the ceremony. Afterwards, they popped a bottle of champagne, spent time enjoying the moment with their families, and we documented a few family photos.

Couples Photos in the Columbia River Gorge

Audrey and Tracy capped off their Columbia River Gorge elopement by wandering through Columbia Hills State Historical Park, soaking in the scenery, and taking some epic couples photos. Since their day fell in the fall, the grasses had turned a beautiful golden color, which only got better as the sun started to set. Ending the day fully immersed in the beauty of the PNW felt like the perfect way to end their celebration.

An Overview of Columbia Hills Historical State Park

Columbia Hills State Historical Park sits on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge, and it has a very different feel from the lush green scenery most people imagine. This area is high desert, with rolling hills, wide-open spaces, and expansive views of the river.

There’s plenty to do here if you’re looking to add adventure to your elopement. Hiking, climbing, camping, and even paragliding are all popular ways to experience the park. But what made this spot special for Audrey and Tracy was the history tied to the land.

This area is part of the traditional territories of many Native American tribes, including the Yakama Nation, Umatilla Indian Reservation, Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, and the Nez Perce Tribe. Horsethief Butte, where they held their ceremony, was once home to a Native American village and later served as a campsite for the Lewis and Clark expedition as they traveled west. It’s a place that’s not only beautiful but also rich with history, and it made the perfect backdrop for their elopement.

Permits to Elope in Columbia Hills Historical State Park

If you want to elope in Washington State Parks, including Columbia Hills State Historical Park, you’ll need a special activity permit. It starts at $45, with extra fees depending on your plans, and should be submitted at least 60 days ahead to columbia.hills@parks.wa.gov. You can find all the details on the Washington State Parks Special Activities Permit page.
