If you’re hoping to elope in Alaska, then look no further! Alaska is seriously one of the most stunning places in the world and is the perfect place for your special day. Read on for everything you need to know for your Alaska elopement!

Decide Where You Want to Elope in Alaska

It’s no secret that Alaska is home to some of the country’s most incredible scenery. While there are endless locations to choose from, here are a few of my favorites.

Kenai Peninsula

The Kenai Penisula is seriously such a dreamy place for your special day! Known for its stunning ocean and mountain views, you’re sure to find a beautiful backdrop for your elopement. It’s also perfect for those wanting to do some fishing, hiking, or whale watching. And if you’re hoping to check a national park off your list, Kenai Fjords National Park is nearby! In terms of accommodations, there are several charming coastal towns, like Seaward, Homer, and Soldotna that should have everything you need.

Matanuska Glacier

If you’re looking for an absolutely epic way to elope in Alaska, then you’ll want to visit Matanuska Glacier. Imagine saying “I do” on the ice surrounded by amazing glacial formations? It’s the largest glacier you can reach by car and one of the most accessible in the entire state, making it relatively easy to get to. However, if you want to add even more adventure to your day, you can take a helicopter ride and land directly on the ice!

Denali National Park

Denali National Park and Preserve is home to some of Alaska’s most pristine and stunning landscapes, as well as the country’s highest peak! From gorgeous rivers to stunning forests and towering mountains, this national park has it all. No matter where you choose to elope in Denali, it will be an unforgettable experience!

Choose When You Want to Elope in Alaska

After picking your elopement location, you’ll want to decide when to visit Alaska! Here’s what you need to know about each season.

Summer

Summer is a beautiful time to elope in Alaska! The weather is mild and with almost 24 hours of daylight, you’ll have so much time to explore to your heart’s content! Expect breathtaking views at every corner, such as wildflowers in full bloom, snow-capped mountains, and roaring waterfalls.

I personally recommend visiting in either May or September. Not only will the weather still be nice, but you’ll avoid peak tourist season. This means that flights and lodging will likely be much cheaper, and you’ll avoid large crowds!

Fall/Spring

Fall and Spring in Alaska are both very short, but have their own unique features. If you want to see incredible colors, then you’ll want to visit Alaska in the fall. The entire landscape is covered in yellow, orange, and red hues that you’ll have to see to believe! Spring in Alaska doesn’t have much to offer, as the snowpack is melting and the summer beauty has yet to reveal itself. Still, there are beautiful mountain views and you won’t have to fight with other tourists!

Winter

Visit Alaska in the winter if you want a snow-filled elopement! Your winter adventure could include snowshoeing, skiing, dog mushing, or simply exploring the twinkling lights strung around town. This season is also the best time to see the northern lights.

Book Your Transportation and Accommodations

While solidifying your travel plans can feel overwhelming, here are a few tips to help you out! Alaska has two major airports, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and the Fairbanks International Airport. Since Alaska is such a large state, be prepared for a bit of a drive to your elopement destination.

In terms of lodging, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, try to choose accommodations close to where you plan to elope. While some driving is unavoidable, you likely don’t want to spend your whole day in the car. I recommend choosing a place to stay that is an hour away or less to minimize drive time. It’s also important to consider what you plan to use the space for. If you want to get ready or spend time where you’re staying, make sure that it matches the vibe of your elopement. This is extra important if you want professional photos taken there.

Hire Your Alaska Elopement Photographer and Other Elopement Vendors

Vendors are an important thing to consider, even for elopements! They not only help make things a lot less stressful but also can help capture your vision and make your big day extra special. Here’s a list of vendors you’ll want to think about when you elope in Alaska.

  • Elopement Photographer
  • Elopement Videographer
  • Florist
  • Hair/Makeup Artist
  • Catering/Baker
  • Decor Rentals
  • Elopement Planner/Coordinator

Apply For Your Marriage License and Permits to Elope in Alaska

During your Alaska elopement, you’ll want to make sure that you obtain the proper marriage license and permits to make everything official!

Luckily, obtaining a marriage license in Alaska is relatively easy. You can apply for a marriage license up to three business days before your elopement, and it’s valid for 90 days after it’s issued. Because of this three-day waiting period, you’ll want to plan on arriving early and submit your marriage license application a few days before you elope. Be sure to check with the country where you’re planning on tying the knot for the most complete information on marriage license information and fees.

Alaska requires you to have an officiant and one witness for your marriage to be legal. While some people hire an officiant, others choose to have a friend or family member officiate. I’m also a licensed officiant and would happily perform your ceremony! In fact, it’s usually one of my favorite memories when I get to officiate for my client. If you don’t plan on inviting guests to your elopement, one of the vendors or I (if I’m not officiating) can act as your witness.

Depending on where you plan to elope, you might need to obtain a special use permit. They usually are needed if you want to hold your ceremony in a National Park or on public land and require you to submit an application and fee. I’ll be able to help walk you through all the logistics once we start working together.

Decide What Activities You Would Like to Include in Your Alaska Elopement Timeline

There are so many different activities that you can choose from for your Alaska elopement! I like to remind couples to think about what things they enjoy doing that are meaningful to them. That way, their elopement is as personal and unique as possible. Some activities to consider include:

  • Hiking
  • Rock climbing
  • Kayaking
  • Riding in a seaplane
  • Riding in a helicopter
  • Viewing the northern lights
  • Skiing
  • Fishing
  • Cake cutting
  • Share a picnic (breakfast, charcuterie, dessert, etc.)
  • Catered meal from a private chef
  • Reading letters from loved ones
  • First Dance

After choosing your activities, you’ll want to start to create a timeline for the day. You can find my blog post dedicated to how much photography coverage you’ll need below, but in general, here’s what I recommend:

  • 4 hours – elopement ceremony only
  • 6 hours – full elopement experience
  • All-day – full elopement experience; perfect for couples who want to explore multiple locations or go at a relaxed pace/include some activities
