Congrats, you’re engaged! It’s time to let loose and celebrate! If you are feeling nervous heading into your engagement session, know that is completely normal, but not necessary. There are plenty of ways to get rid of the nerves and rock your engagement photo session, and with these three tips you’ll be well on your way!
3 Tips for Absolutely Rocking Your Engagement Photo Session
Treat Your Engagement Photo Session Like a Date
The first tip for having fun, authentic engagement photos is to treat your engagement session like a date. Spend time leading up to it getting ready together and talking about how special this time feels. Maybe plan a dinner beforehand or grab drinks after the shoot.
When it comes time for the shoot, please feel free to talk and make each other laugh. Interact with each other how you normally would and, of course, don’t forget to smile! If there’s something cute that you like to do with each other, do it! Nose kisses, holding hands, dancing, playing with each other’s hair, etc. The more you are focused on each other, the better. Plus, incorporating these details will make your photos that much more personal and meaningful.
Keep Moving Around During the Session
As an engagement photographer, I love to encourage couples to move around during their session. Part of my photography style is to give prompts instead of super posey poses. These prompts encourage you to move around together instead of staying static. The more movement that you naturally add to each prompt, the better! Not only will it add more variety to your photos but it will also make the session more fun for you guys. Below are a few movement ideas and prompts I give my couples:
- play with your partner’s hair or gently cup their face
- pull your partner in for a kiss
- give your partner a spin or dance (I also bring music to each session for each couple who is interested, so feel free to bust a move whenever you’re feeling it.)
When in Doubt, Reach for Your Partner
It’s your engagement session so to the extent that you both are comfortable, I will encourage you to be touching. The closer you guys are together and the more you put your hands on each other, the more intimate and romantic your photos will feel. If, during the session, you don’t know what to do with your hands, put them on your partner! Pull your partner in close, hold their hand, and put your arms around them. Even while transitioning from place to place, hold hands! I will capture candid photos as we’re walking around.
Hopefully, these three tips will help you feel more prepared for your engagement photo session. For more engagement tips, check out my guide on what to wear to your engagement photography session.
