If you are wondering what it would be like to elope in Iceland, let me tell you that you can’t go wrong with planning an Iceland elopement! It is just one of those places you have to experience for yourself! Although it’s a small island, Iceland has some of the most diverse sceneries, and, getting married here is a relatively straightforward process (win, win!). To learn more about how to elope in Iceland, keep scrolling for everything you need to know from the best locations, how to get a marriage license, and more!

Decide Where You Want to Elope in Iceland

Would you believe it if I told you that Iceland has some of the most diverse landscapes in the world? From lush green cliffs to waterfalls to icy glacial lagoons to black sand beaches and even hot springs, this country has it all! Here are 7 of the best places to elope in Iceland!

Kirkjufell

Also known as Church Mountain, Kirkjufell is one of the most well-known mountains in Iceland. The mountain peak resembles a church steeple (or a witch’s hat depending on your viewpoint) and is surrounded by waterfalls cascading into a crystal-clear pool. One of the best parts about Kirkjufell is that you can visit year-round! The spring, summer, and fall seasons will give you the lush green views that Iceland is known for, while winter brings a beautiful layer of snow that is truly magical to witness.

Westfjords

The Westfjords is not just one location, but a whole region of Iceland! This area offers views of Iceland’s wide-open fjords (long, narrow, and deep inlets of water that are often surrounded by steep cliffs) and charming fishing villages. It’s also one of the less-populated areas of Iceland making it the perfect place to elope in Iceland (especially if you are looking to get away from the crowds).

Skógafoss

As one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, Skogafoss is an Iceland elopement location you don’t want to miss! The waterfall measures about 60 meters tall (approximately 200 feet), and 25 meters (82 feet) wide, so needless to say there is always a steady stream of water flowing down. One of the best parts of this waterfall though is that on almost any day of the year, you get to see a rainbow (or two if you’re lucky!).

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

If you want a truly epic Iceland elopement location, I can’t think of anything more iconic than Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. This black sand beach is one of the most well-known beaches in Iceland and for good reason! With black sand made from volcanic ash, basalt columns (natural pillars of hardened lava created by the contraction of volcanic rock as it cools), and impressive sea stacks rising out of the water, there is so much beauty to take in at this Iceland elopement location.

Búðakirkja (aka The Little Black Church)

If you’ve researched Iceland elopements, no doubt you’ve come across photos of The Little Black Church. Located in a scenic lava field, this tiny wood church is one of the most picturesque places to elope in Iceland. You can choose to get married in the church or simply add it as a stop on your Iceland elopement timeline.

Landmannalaugar

If a hot spring is on your list of places to elope in Iceland, then you’ll want to spend some time at Landmannalaugar! Located in Iceland’s southern highlands, this location is known for hiking and diverse landscapes. From vibrant multi-colored mountains to geothermal hot springs and lava fields, this is one Iceland elopement location you won’t want to miss!

Jökulsárlón

You can’t visit Iceland without witnessing at least one icy glacial lake! As Iceland’s deepest lake, Jokulsarlon is a stunning place to elope. The lake is filled with massive icebergs (sometimes stories high) that have broken off from the surrounding glaciers. On top of their impressive size, these icebergs are also known for their unique mix of colors ranging from white, electric blue, and black.

Choose When You Want to Elope in Iceland

Once you’ve decided where to elope in Iceland, you’ll want to decide when to visit! Choosing when to elope in Iceland all comes down to the type of experience you want to have. Iceland’s weather tends to be cool year-round, but its weather is known to change quickly and drastically meaning even during the warmer months, you may still experience a range of weather conditions. Here are some things to know about Iceland’s seasons.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is the warmest season in Iceland, which means it is also the most popular. Eloping during these months means you’ll be able to access most of the areas in the country without worrying about road closures and snow. You’ll also get to experience Iceland’s midnight sun and with longer days, you’ll get more time for adventure photos! However, summertime means more visitors and crowds, so if you’re looking to elope during a less popular season while still getting great weather, I recommend eloping during the fall.

Fall (September – November)

The early fall months give you the beauty of summer and semi-warm temperatures but without the crowds. This is a great time to elope in Iceland, however, if you want to experience the Northern Lights I recommend eloping during late fall or early winter.

Winter (December – February)

Wintertime in Iceland tends to be dark and snowy and with shorter days, there isn’t as much time to explore. However, the winter months are also when you have the highest chance of seeing the Northern Lights, so if this is on your bucket list, I highly recommend eloping during this season!

Spring (March – May)

While not as popular as summer or fall, springtime brings its own beauty to Iceland. During these months, you can see Iceland’s wildlife and witness the beautiful lupine flower fields. After a snowy winter, the waterfalls are at their peak, however, keep in mind you may still experience some road closures due to snow.

Book Your Transportation and Accommodations

As your Iceland elopement gets closer, you’ll want to book your travel and accommodations. If you are traveling internationally, the most popular airport to fly to is Keflavík International Airport (KEF). From there you can rent a car for easy access around the island. Keep in mind that if renting a car, you may need a 4×4 vehicle to reach certain locations.

In terms of lodging, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, try to choose accommodations close to where you plan to elope. While some driving is unavoidable, you likely don’t want to spend your whole day in the car. I recommend choosing a place to stay that is an hour away or less to minimize drive time. It’s also important to consider what you plan to use the space for. If you want to get ready or spend time where you’re staying, make sure that it matches the vibe of your elopement. This is extra important if you want professional photos taken there.

Hire Your Iceland Elopement Photographer and Other Elopement Vendors

While hiring vendors for your elopement in Iceland, isn’t necessary, it can make your day even more special! On top of hiring an elopement photographer (hey, that’s me) to document all the important moments, you may want to consider a few other vendors to help bring your vision to life. Here’s a list of vendors you’ll want to think about when you elope in Iceland.

  • Elopement Photographer
  • Elopement Videographer
  • Elopement Planner/Coordinator
  • Florist
  • Hair/Makeup Artist
  • Officiant
  • Catering/Baker
  • Decor Rentals

Apply For Your Marriage License to Legally Elope in Iceland

The good news is that you can get legally married in Iceland even if it is not your home country. Iceland has a relatively straightforward process when it comes to obtaining a marriage license.

If you are a foreigner, you will need to complete a marriage notification form at least three weeks before your wedding date. This form can be filled out and sent via email and there is no charge to submit it.

Once you arrive in Iceland, you’ll need to go to the regional district commissioner’s office (for the elopement location you’ve chosen) to review the documents and receive your marriage license.

In addition to the paperwork, you will also need an officiant and two witnesses present at your ceremony. Your officiant must be licensed in Iceland, however, if you want to do a symbolic ceremony, you can simply have a friend or family member perform the ceremony.

Getting legally married in Iceland is a relatively easy process, however, I highly recommend hiring a local planner to help walk you through the process. A local elopement planner will know the ins and outs of Iceland’s marriage laws and will be able to help guide you through the steps necessary to make your marriage official.

If getting married abroad feels too stressful, another alternative is to sign the paperwork in your home state/country. You can complete the legal paperwork at home and save your personal vows for your Iceland elopement.

There is no right or wrong way to go. It all comes down to what feels right to you.
